The IDF soldier who sings in Arabic
The latest musical sensation in the Arab world is a girl in Israeli army uniform (with thanks: Michelle):
When May Weizman was 11, her parents bought a record by the Lebanese singer Nancy Ajram. Now May has been wowing the Arab world with covers of songs in Arabic, and her videos have been attracting thousands of views from the Arab world on social media and TicToc. Arabic media have even broadcast reports about her.
May’s career began at Arab weddings, but she also sings in Hebrew.
Nowadays May is serving in the Israeli army. ‘Music is the language of peace’, she says in an IDF video clip.
In an interview with i24 News, May says she is a soldier and a singer, and her videos were made spontaneously.
May is not the first Israeli to draw a following from the Arab world. Habib Galbi, by the Yemenite girl band A-wa, went viral about seven years ago, and became the first track in Judeo-Arabic to top the Israeli charts.
